Film Stills From Westerns is a ongoing research project designed to discover and examine the visual patterns that occur within The Western film genre.
By compiling film stills from Westerns this archival project hopes to develop a visual database which will act as a sort of map, examining how the repetition of cinematic images generates visual mythologies.
On Landscape is a single channel video-loop by Sydney-based artist Andrew Robards that explores the presence of landscape in the Western. It is part of a larger body of work that Robards is pursuing that deals with the Western genre in historical cinema and its relation to contemporary culture. By repeating film stills and arranging them into geometric patterns it transforms a single linear image into an abstract multiple, examining how the repetition found in cinematic imagery creates composite visual mythologies.
